Summer Letter

June 2018

Dear Baldwin Academy Parents:

As the principal of Baldwin, I would like to welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year.  Baldwin is an exceptional school, with exceptional parents, teachers, and students. Our school was recently recognized as a 2017-2018 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor Roll School for our high achievement and student success!  The Honor Roll Program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes.  Baldwin Academy is one of 1,798 public schools in California to be recognized.  I am so proud of the staff’s tireless work ethic!   Our teachers and staff work hard to ensure that every student is provided daily instruction that develops 21st century and problem solving skills.

This past year we integrated Code to the Future into our instruction.  All of our students learned about the building blocks to computer programming all the way to actually programming robots.  This is the official first year of the adopted New Generation Science Standards.  Our school has worked to shift our instruction to these new standards for the past two years.  We are fortunate that we will continue to provide our students instruction aligned to NGSS in our science lab with Mrs. Rathman!

Lastly, this year during our Open House our teachers shared information to make a better “transition” to their next grade level.  Please review the information that was shared and visit our website: - you will find quick links. For returning students, our teachers sent shared every student’s log in information for Lexia and Dreambox.

The following is a list of information that is important to begin another successful year:

Posting of Class Lists:

On Monday, August 6th the class lists will be posted on the cafeteria doors after 4:00 p.m.

Meet Your Teacher:

This year we will be doing something new, on Tuesday, August 7th we will be opening up our school so that students meet their teacher.  Our goal is to help our students make a good transition into their first day of school or their first of a new grade.  The event will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

First Day of School:  Wednesday, August 8th .

Classes will be on a regular schedule that day.  Our classes are currently very full at all grade levels.  Therefore, it is absolutely critical that your child attend on the first day or risk losing his/her place at Baldwin and being moved to another school.   School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Children should arrive no later than 7:55 a.m. on a daily basis.  All schools in our district are closed campuses, but we will allow parents to come onto campus August 8th – August 10th to help transition your child(ren) into the next grade. Class times are as follows:

TK, Kindergarten, First, Second &Third Grades:          8:00 a.m. to 1:51 p.m.

                                                  Fourth, Fifth, Sixth Grades                                                                            8:00 a.m. to 2:07 p.m.

***Students must be picked up promptly daily!

As a school, we are going to monitor this even more closely this year.  School attendance is required by law and daily attendance is expected unless they are running a temperature or have a contagious illness. Extended holiday weekends, out of town trips must not be planned.  These types of absences are considered a truant absence, for which parents and students can be cited by police with heavy fines and court appearances resulting.  Absences and tardies will be more closely monitored by our SSTOSA and principal.  Students who are habitually tardy or absent will be referred to the School Attendance Review Team and/or district level School Attendance School Board.  ATTACHED YOU HAVE THE CALENDAR FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR!

The district uniform policy will be strictly enforced and is detailed in the District and School Handbooks.  All students are to wear plain dark blue pants, shorts, or skirts, with light blue, navy blue or white polo style shirts.  All tops must have sleeves and collars.  Faded denim will not be allowed – NO KHAKI COLOR!  Clothing must be free from pictures, writing and embellishments, be in good condition with no holes, tears or frayed edges.  All clothing must fit the student at the waist and not be oversized or baggy.  Skin tight or low-rise jeans are not allowed.  Baldwin Academy or college shirts may also be worn.  According to district policy, a waiver may be granted only during the two weeks prior to the first day of school and after the parent meets with the principal.  Waivers must be renewed annually and are granted for religious reasons, extreme financial hardship due to homelessness or unemployment by the head of household with four or more children in the school district.  Any student with a waiver on file is expected to follow the district dress code as outlined in the district handbook.  (Shirts must have sleeves and collars, no pictures or writing with the same fit requirements outlined above).  Please plan your summer shopping accordingly.  Students out of compliance with the uniform policy will need to call home for a change of clothes or change into uniforms held in the office.

After School Program:

We have been privileged to have two after school programs, however this year there was a change in qualifying criteria. This year Baldwin will only have one program - The ASES after school program will be on our campus from 1:51 to 6:00 p.m. on school days. Students must attend the program in its entirety; regular early checkouts will result in program dismissal. There is no cost to the families, but space is limited to a first-come, first-served basis.  If you are interested in this program and would like to be added to the waitlist, please contact the Del Haven Community Center directly at (626) 917-9789.

Emergency Information:

On the first day of school you will be receiving a copy of the District and School Parent/Student Handbooks and other important papers in a Baldwin folder.  These handbooks contain very important information regarding our school and district policies.  Please review and maintain them in a safe place for future reference throughout the school year.  In addition, you will find a suggested emergency list for your child’s emergency pack.  Please fill out the emergency information cards and put together emergency packs no later than Friday, August 31st.

Free and Reduced Lunch Fee Applications:

These applications must be renewed annually at the beginning of the school year.  We will be encouraging all parents to complete an application, as this directly impacts funding for next school year.  Lunch application will be sent directly to your home from the district office, or you may pick one up from the school office.  Please fill out all of the information and return it to the district office at 15959 E. Gale Avenue for processing. If you do not qualify, breakfast is FREE and lunch last year was $1.90.   The cafeteria and office do not loan money to students.  You may pay in advance through the cafeteria for your convenience. You can also go online to or call (626) 933-3901 to complete your lunch application after July 11th.

Breakfast is served from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. and is free to our entire student population.   We need to ask that all adults remain outside the cafeteria in order to facilitate the movement of large numbers of students through the cafeteria in a short amount of time.  Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated!

Parking Lot:

For your children’s own safety, please be sure to pull your vehicle adjacent to the curb before allowing them to enter or exit.    Students must use the crosswalk with the crossing guard when crossing the street at all times!

End of School Day:

Teachers will escort their classes to the front gates upon dismissal.  All parents should wait outside the gates to meet their children.  Because we have no one supervising the back exit, you must fill out a permission form included in the first day of school information folder if you wish to have your child exit through the back.  This permission may be revoked at any time if we find the students are behaving in an unsafe manner.  Grades TK and Kindergarten classes will need to be picked up from your child’s classrooms, 1st grade classes will exit through the gates by the TK classes, 2nd grade classes will exit through the cafeteria, and Grades 3-6 through the front gate by the office.

Adults on Campus:

As previously mentioned, this is a closed campus and in order to ensure the safety and security of all students and adults on campus, you must always check in through the front office before entering school grounds.  All visitors and volunteers must have a visitor badge from the office before entering school grounds for any reason.

                    Keeping in Touch:

For the school to be effective, it is important that we keep in touch with the community.  You will receive notices regularly from the school either through your child, by phone message or mail.  Important notices are posted on the marquee, on the office bulletin boards and on the Baldwin Academy website  .   On a different note, it is absolutely critical that you keep all emergency contact information current with our school office.  Please let us know if your phone numbers change, so we can always get a hold of you in the case of an emergency with your child.  We would like more parent participation and so we invite you to participate in any of our organizations: Booster Club, English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC) and School Site Council, (SSC) meetings.  Your input and advice are always welcome.  Of course, you can always request to meet with me personally if you have questions or concerns.  Please feel free to contact me through the front office, by phone at 933-3700 or by email at

***Our school office will be closed: June 18th through June 29th.  We will also be closed July 16th through July 25th. (Most Fridays will be closed during the summer)  If you know of anyone that needs to enroll their child, please direct them to Student and Family Services as they have our enrollment packets until we return, space is very limited this year!   Their number is (626) 933-4307.

We are looking forward to another exceptional year at Baldwin Academy!
